NSCC: What happened to “Elbows Up”?

The NSCC has made a decision to outsource food services across its 15 campuses to Aramark, a private American company.  This means that twenty-seven long time employees are losing good jobs which have a pension and health benefits. Many of these members live in rural communities where it will be difficult to get the same level of health benefits and pensions.

The Atlantic Academic Union stands with the NSGEU in support of its members.  As fellow employees of NSCC, we have questions for NSCC President Don Bureaux: If the mission statement of NSCC is “Building Nova Scotia's economy and quality of life through education and innovation”, how will cutting public sector jobs across communities in Nova Scotia help with the economy and quality of life in Nova Scotia?  Why is cutting public sector jobs in favour of outsourcing an innovative way to save money?  How does spending public money on a private American company benefit our province and our country?   What happened to “Elbows Up”?
